What you need to know about the ‘federal’ pipes and water system
Federal government officials said Friday that the new pipe that connects New York City and New Jersey is the same as the one the city was using before Hurricane Sandy.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said it’s the same one used by the city of New York.
The agency said the new pipes were tested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and found to be safe.
The FEMA statement came a day after the city and New York State announced that the New York and New Brunswick pipes will remain open for residents and businesses, but the state of New Jersey has decided to shut down its system until repairs are made.
It will be the state’s second state to shut its water system.
The New York Times reports that the federal agency is the lead contractor on the $1.2 billion project.
